How to choose a team event

Posted by Jo Kelly

Deciding to run a team event for your staff can be complicated. There’s a wealth of options to consider, from the type of event you decide to hold, to the size and location.

We highlight the key considerations to make when choosing your team event.

Nobody knows your business like you do, so, when choosing a corporate event for your staff, it’s a good idea to tie it into what your business does.

For example, a business that makes sporting goods could reward its staff with a trip to a major sporting event. Or a company that sells audio-visual installations could reward employees with a trip to a film premiere.

If you want to motivate your staff you should understand what sort of events will get them excited, which they would, in turn, work hard to win as a reward.

Running an event that’s only of interest to one group of people won’t necessarily motivate your other staff to the same degree, compared with something with broader appeal. An event involving motor racing, for instance, will probably only appeal to those people in your team who are interested in cars.

A niche event, like this, might work for a team in a specific industry. In this case, attending a relevant auto conference as part of an incentive travel trip. However, for the most part, you should aim to offer an incentive that will excite and inspire as many members of your team as possible.

You should also consider the number of people who will be attending the event. This can impact the activities you get involved in and affect your budget. For example, a team night out can accommodate everyone. However, if you want to take in a show or a gig, additional costs, like ticket prices, can make total costs much higher.

Depending on the location of the venue, the logistics, with regards to getting there, might also make it difficult for everyone to attend.

Many potential team events can be scaled up or down, depending on the size of a team. When planning an event, it’s important to check that the event you have in mind is practical and achievable with the numbers you have.

The right team event can provide staff with a goal to work towards and inspire them to work harder. It can also offer a fantastic way of promoting unity between a team and reward them for their collective efforts and hard work.
