Top winter incentive travel destinations for 2018-19

Posted by Jo Kelly

Winter can be a great time to offer an incentive travel trip. It can provide an effective way to encourage employees to achieve a strong Christmas sales period, motivate your team to focus on your brand and products or reward staff for performance against targets.

It’s wise to start organising an incentive travel trip for the winter as soon as you can – we recommend at the end of the summer, so you can run a tactical 3-month throughout the autumn and the trip can take place in the new year. So here’s our list of top destinations to take your staff this winter season.

Mayrhofen, Austria

With its spectacular Zillertal Alps, reliable snow and ski resorts, this town in the western Austrian state of Tyrol, is an ideal destination to take your team this winter, especially if they’re ski lovers. It boasts 136km of ski runs, cross country ski tours, and almost 60 lifts. This includes the main ski area, known as the Penken Action Mountain.

For those staff looking for snow activities that don’t involve skiing, there’s also plenty to choose from. This includes snowshoeing, which involves hiking over the snow in specially designed shoes. There are many winter hiking tours that can be enjoyed this way, with some routes lit at night. There’s also sledging and, for those who want to take in the stunning views of the Zillertal Alps from above, paragliding. With its Après ski scene, there’s also plenty of bars and clubs for your top performers to enjoy when the sun goes down.

Prague, Czech Republic

There are many reasons to take your staff to the Czech Republic’s capital city this winter. Bisected by the scenic Vltava river, Prague’s fairytale architecture is even more stunning when covered in snow. There also tends to be less tourists, and the city’s food, including hot meaty stews and warming soups, are better suited to the cold.

You could take your team to one of the city’s Christmas markets – known for being some of the best in Europe – and enjoy a steaming cup of Czech mulled wine. Or let them experience some ice skating on one of the many rinks that pop up around the city over winter, such as in the picturesque Old Town Square. Other festive highlights include the themed Christmas exhibition in the Bethlehem Chapel. Past themes include bells, wood, and glass. There’s also nativity scenes and processions to watch.

Tromo, Norway

This city, which stands above the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway, is a great destination to take your team for a truly spectacular winter experience. There are plenty of once-in-a-lifetime experiences to enjoy and amazing sights to see. You could also coincide your trip with Sami Week in February, when exhibitions and concerts are held, and the city’s annual Reindeer Race takes place.

There are many reasons to take your staff to Tromo in the winter. It’s a good place and time to see Aurora Borealis, otherwise known as the spectacular Northern Lights. Your staff could also experience whale watching, as there’s a very high chance of seeing the great mammals between late October and mid-January. You could also take your staff dog or reindeer sledging, or enjoy snowmobiling. Or let your best performers visit Tromo’s ice domes, which boasts an ice bar and restaurant.

Kerala, India

If you’re looking for an alternative to your typical winter destination, Kerala, a state on India’s tropical Malabar coast, is a good choice. During this time of year, the high temperatures cool, the state has the lowest amount of rainfall, and nature appears in all its glory – more colourful and beautiful than ever.

There’s also a number of festivals and carnivals to enjoy.

You could let your staff experience Pongal, an important festival that’s celebrated in the winter. Or let them celebrate Karthigai, the festival of lights. Or you could take them to Kochi for the state’s end-of-year carnival. The event includes bike races, fire displays, beach football and swimming competitions. For a more relaxing and serene experience, you could take your best performers on a houseboat along the Alleppey backwaters, visit a tea plantation in Munnar, or explore the mangrove forests.

Lake Como, Italy

Set in Northern Italy’s Lombardy region against the foothills of the Alps, Lake Como is beautiful all year round. But with stunning colours and snow-covered landscapes, it is said to look its best in winter. It boasts beautiful gardens and parks, attracts fewer tourists, and is ideal for helping hard-working staff relax after a long and busy sales campaign.

You could let your staff experience some canoeing or a boat ride on the Lake’s tranquil waters. They could also enjoy some shopping in Como town, or pay a visit to the Duomo of Como, the town’s beautiful cathedral, or the botanical gardens. For more of a festive experience, you could take your team to the spectacular Como Magic Light Festival. There’s also many ski resorts in the area for your sport and ski lovers to enjoy, with slopes for skiers of all abilities.
