What are the stages of team building?

Building a team isn’t always easy. You have to find people, bring them together, and then set about moulding that group of strangers into a cohesive unit that can deliver the results your business needs.

From bringing the team together to ironing out conflicts, understanding the different points in the creation of a team can help develop a much stronger and effective group.

Forming a team

The first step is actually bringing together the people you want to form your team.

This can involve interviewing and finding the team members. The members of the team can then introduce themselves to each other and your management can outline what the team is expected to accomplish. This could include specific sales targets or products to sell.

People should be brought into the team based on individual skills and abilities, all geared towards a specific goal. This could involve a group of people with proven track records in sales, or a team that can combine different skill sets to achieve a set goal.

At this point, people should start to fall into their roles within a team, and begin looking at how their individual working styles will mesh together. This can be where friction begins to develop.

Smoothing out issues

As people adapt to their ways of working and adjust to being part of a new team, issues can arise. Different methodologies and processes might not mesh together as well as you expected.

This can cause frustration and stress within a team, which should be resolved quickly. For example, different methods of organisation might clash, or team members may struggle adapting to new ways of working.

Finding a common ground, and developing the means to work towards the strengths of each team member, is vital to the team’s long-term success.

Once the team is established and settled you can begin looking at ways to improve its performance.

This could be done with additional training and by improving existing skills, either through courses, conferences and specialist events.
